GRASS

Parent/child and juniors grass tournaments planned for spring.
Check back here in March for tournament dates!

Please note: outdoor rules differ slightly from indoor. The court is 8 meters (26'3") by 16 meters (52'6") instead of 9 meters by 18 meters. When a player attempts to hand set the ball, the contact must be much cleaner than indoors. If a hand set goes across the net, a player must be square to (facing) the direction in which the ball travels. No side setting allowed. A serve may not be received with a hand set unless that set is squeaky clean (no double contact, no lift). This can often (but not always) be determined by rotation - the ball should not spin. Finally, a player may not "tip" the ball across the net with the fingers (called an "open hand tip") but must contact the ball with a hard surface of the hand, i.e. a roll shot off the palm, a pokey (knuckle), fist, etc. A close cousin of this rule is that a block cannot be redirected with the fingers.

Playing grass doubles is a great way to improve defensive reading ability and court coverage, and is a ton of fun.
